May 2, 1894: Desperado Wilson

Today we learn about a lynching in Iowa through the pages of The Weekly Star and Kansan (Independence, Kansas) dated May 4, 1894:

An Iowa Lynching.

MISSOURI VALLEY, Ia., May 2.—Desperado Wilson, one of the gang of burglars who killed Marshal Williams Saturday morning, was lynched at 2:10 this morning by about 150 men, who met at the school house at midnight, organized, went to the jail and broke in. Wilson was hanged in the city hall.

Wilson said he was driven to the murder in self-defense, but would not say anything about his past. The one who escaped is said to have been captured. he would certainly have been lynched had he been brought to this city and he may be yet.

Thank you for joining me and as always, I hope I leave you with something to ponder.
