February 23, 1904: William Fambro

The Wilmington Messenger (Wilmington, N. C.) February 25, 1904 edition is where we find today's featured lynching:

Mob Shoots a Negro to Death.

Griffin, Ga., February 24.—William Fambro, a negro, was shot to death on the outskirts of this city late last night by a mob of men who fired on his house. Fambro's wife, who was in the house escaped injury. The negro sometime ago was arrested on a charge of insulting a white woman and her child and was sentenced to a term in the county chain gang. His fine was afterward paid by his employer. Over a thousand shots were sent into the building before the mob retired.

Thank you for joining me and I hope I leave you with something to ponder.

  1. Both sets of my great grand parents are from Griffin, GA. It moves me to the brink of tears to know that an African American man's life was worth so little that he could be sentenced to time on a chain gang and eventually executed for allegedly insulting a white woman.

    1. It was and still is such a statement on the value given to some lives over others. Thank you so much for taking the time to read our blog.
